10th National Strawberry Festival - 2003 Edition

More than 100 thousand visitors are expected for the 10th National Strawberry Festival in Bom Princípio-RS. In 2003 it will take place September 5th, 6th and 7th, 12th, 13th and 14th, 19th, 20th and 21st in the Municipal Park area, which is located downtown, next to the RS-122 road.

The Strawberry Festival is a great showcase for work, culture, typical cuisine, industrial and commercial expositions, shows, happiness and a lot of cheerfulness, all accompanied by the delicious flavor of the fruit (which has become a symbol for the city) and the best it has to offer.

Among the main attractions of the fair, some highlights are the shows by CPM 22 (on the 14th at 5 PM), Tchê Garotos (on the 20th at 5 PM), Tequila Baby (on the 12th at 10:30 PM), Tchê Barbaridade (on the 21st at 5 PM).

From this edition on, the Festival has a new and beautiful portico, affectionately called "big strawberry",  at the entrance of the park, which contains the whole administrative body.

9th National Strawberry Festival – 2001’s Edition

September 07th, 2001 (1st day of the Festival)

Today it was opened, in Bom Princípio-RS, the 9th National Strawberry Festival. There are being expected more than 80,000 visitors.  

The municipality of Bom Princípio was created in 1982 and installed in January 1st, 1983; during these 18 years of independence, it reached an outstanding social, cultural and economic development, becoming a reference for many other municipalities in Brazil (see images of the city:  123).  

The city is 80km away from Porto Alegre.  Its area began to be colonized in 1846, when Guilherme Winter, coming from São José do Hortêncio (at the time named Portugieseschneis), purchased lands that were divided into lots of around 24 hectares each and that were shared with other German immigrants. A list of these 1854’s families comprises surnames as Junges, Schmitz, Ludwig, Steffen, Selbach and other. The farmhands had come mainly from Rhine and Loire valleys, on the border of Germany and France. Due to this, it is more proper to refer to them as Franco-German descendants. The inheritance from these farmhands is still noticed in the region, mainly through the dialect, the typical language used in everyday conversation, as well as through the Rhenish-style houses that are different from the Bavarian style for their simplicity and functionality.

Until 1900, this region of the "old colony" has lived a luxurious life, marked by rich deeds and constructions: the Church was one of the most beautiful in the country, full of wonderful paintings (see images:  12), as well as images and objects imported from Germany and other countries. In 1900 it was also built a Marist School that was the embryo of the current Pontifícia Universidade Católica do RS. Nevertheless, without any other vacation as the work in the colony, many people were obliged to migrate for other regions, looking for more cultivable lands, mainly in the Alto Jacuí region (where they have established municipalities as Selbach) and, later,  Santa Rosa, west of Santa Catarina, east of Argentina, Paraná and farther.

With the RS-122 highway construction during the 60’s, which connected Porto Alegre with Caxias do Sul region,  via Bom Princípio, the socio-economical situation started to change.  In the early 80’s, the “village” had the opportunity to emancipate together with other 12 municipalities of the state  (Parobé, Teutônia, Capão da Canoa and others). Since then, the former simple village had started an amazing development process that nowadays is reflected in its excellent quality of life rates. Its progressive industries in the ceramic branch  (it is the base of several "Vogel" ceramics, among others), furniture  (as Madesa), shoes, appliances and other have reverted the historical phenomena of immigration, bringing back descendants of the farmhands that once had to migrate.

In 1988, the municipality has supported the emancipation of two of its districts: São Vendelino and Tupandi, that are among the most progressive in RS.  According to the IBGE’s census of 1991, these three municipalities had the highest percent of literate paterfamilias in Brazil.  In these municipalities, the school is an obligation and a life reference for children. It’s not allowed and also no children are out of school.

September 8th, 2001 (2nd day of the Festival)

The day itinerary has included a visit to the “Book Space"; to the inauguration of the new and magnificent Cultural Center of Bom Princípio -RS; and a quick tour at the Exhibition Center.

1) The Cultural Center, inaugurated at 7 o’clock p.m. has 500 seats and modern equipment for several art performances. It is located within the Municipal Park, in a clear and wide space with easy parking.  The Cultural Center shall play an important role in the small municipality (with around 10,000 inhabitants) and it’s an admirable work for the artistic and cultural life of its people.  

The building is 1,450 m2, and was built at a cost of  0.6 CUBs/m2, with resources from the Ministry of Culture and own. As it may be seen through the images, the style is modern, with a nice color combination.

2) The "Book Space" is in its 5th edition and it is a cultural project developed by Gráfica Dominó (phone 051-634-1228), and its main purpose is to integrate to the Strawberry Festival leisure the pleasure of reading. The theme for this 5th edition is “Book: a way for the land change”.  On the next days, there are foreseen the following activities:

- September 9th (Sunday), at 3:00 p.m.: 2002 Grammatical Agenda launching, autograph session with Paulo Flavor Lemur, president of the Riograndense Book Chamber;

- September 10th at 3:00 p.m.: Speech and autograph session with the writer Moacyr Scliar;

- September 12th  (Wednesday), at 2:00 p.m.: Show "The giant woman", with the presence of the writer Gustavo Finkler;

- September 15th (Saturday), at 9 o’clock a.m.: speech and autograph session with Armindo Trevisan (at Juvenato);

September 16th (Sunday), at 3:00 p.m.: launching and autograph session for the book "Bom Princípio – short stories and poems", by Nicolau Henz.

3) At the Exhibition Center, there are present several dozens of companies; among them the ceramic sector outstanding, manufacturers of enameled tiles. Several companies originated from the old brick factory "Vogel", from Bela Vista district. They were updated, transformed and enlarged and had taken “Vogel” products to several parts of the country, as well as, for Mercosul countries and to North America:

- Cerâmica Vogel: is the company or the original "frame" for several branches that developed afterwards. It was founded 45 years ago with the manual manufacture of tiles and  bricks. Nowadays, the company produces Roman and French tiles, natural and enameled several colors and shades. It has representatives all over Brazil. See some images of its stand:  1;

- Cerâmicas João Vogel: it was established in 1998 and it is located at RS-122 highway, in Bom Princípio-RS; it is specialized in enameled tiles and is one of the biggest manufacturers of this kind of tiles. See images of the stand:   1,   2

- Cláudio Vogel e Filho: it was founded in 1989, and it is located in Bom Princípio-RS, where it has a built area of 16,000 m2. It is nowadays the biggest manufacturer of natural and enameled tiles in Brazil. It has representatives in several states of Brazil, as well as in Uruguay, Argentina and the United States. It has a partnership with the engineering laboratory of UFRGS, where Tecnotelha was developed, which is manufactured with the most up-to-the minute technology. See some images of the stand:  1,   2.

-         Cerâmica Kaspary: it is installed next to RS-122 highway, in Bom Princípio-RS, in an area of 30,000m2; it produces pre-moulded slabs, Roman and French natural and enameled tiles, as well as perforated bricks. September 14th (8th day of the Festival)

The day itinerary highlights the sweets prepared with strawberries, which are the reason for this beautiful festival, which attracts mainly kids and youngsters. The Exhibition Center stands are also focused. They present samples of what they do and of what the region companies produce.

September 15th, 2001 (penultimate day of the Festival)

In this day itinerary, there have been highlighted other Exhibition Center stands, which can be added to the regional companies already presented. At the outside of the Park, there are many options for the visitors; the Book Space, where many important RS and Brazilian writers have passed by (as Moacyr Scliar, Paulo Flávio Ledur, Armindo Trevisan, Elma Santana and others), making a significant contact with their readers, mainly of the new generations. The book space is located in a typical Renish style house, restored and moved from the interior of the municipality to the Park area, with the intention of showing to the public how the houses of the pioneers who occupied the region were. Most of them were originated from the Rhein region, in Germany. The big Amusement Park, next to the City Hall building, is the joy for children (and the parents’ nightmare); at the central area of the park, there can be seen musical performances, which move the big “mechanism” of the event, attracting mainly the young people. September 16th (last day of the Festival)

This day was reserved for the image generation through the mobile webcam and also to take some open-air digital images. As it is usual in RS, one event brings about another one; so, there had come many representatives from other municipalities to divulge their own events. We can remember now Salvador do Sul, São Vendelino, Igrejinha and Nova Santa Rita municipalities, which had brought their queens and princesses:   1,   2,   3

In spite of the cold, several thousand people attended the fair during this last day; between 3:00 and 6:00 o’clock p.m., the park area became crowded, as it can be seen in the following images:   1,  2  3  4  5,   6,   7  8  9,   10  11,   12,   13,   14,  15

There is a quotation that says that one image is worth thousand words; the images recorded in this short documentary certainly carry a little bit of the festival: joy, spontaneity, and organization.

To be viable, a festival like this demands the efforts of hundreds of people. In this edition, the President of the Organization Committee was Mr. Elton Sebastian. The queen Paula Schons Vieceli and the princesses Izabelle Ledur and Tatiana Scherer had an active participation in divulging the event. Several other managing positions within the Organization Committee and many volunteers had contributed for the success of the fair. The general feeling is of "accomplished mission":    1,   2,   3

In two years the festival will have another edition; and it will be even better, because it as a special reason for that: the proper strawberry fruit.
